Ouch! Insights from an ex-CMIO who became a trauma patient in our healthcare system
As a physician, have you ever wondered what being a patient in our healthcare system would be like? Not "your healthcare system where you might be treated as a VIP" but a healthcare system in a new community far from home where you were just another patient. On October 5, 2024, that is precisely what happened to me. As an ex-CMIO who had spent the last 15 years of my professional career focused on using technology to make healthcare better, I had a trauma that hospitalized me 2300 miles away from my primary source of care. As someone with an intimate knowledge of electronic health records, workflows, health information exchange, clinical decision support, and care transitions, I had expectations. I was a health information technology insider experiencing how digitization has changed healthcare; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Join me as I share that journey and insights on leveraging technology to improve efficiency and patient experience. At the end of the session, participants will: Identify changes that can be made in an existing digital health system to improve efficiency and patient experience. After this activity, participants will reimagine the electronic health record as a relational database that should be queried to personalize care and improve quality. After this activity, participants will list opportunities to reduce duplicate testing and improve patient care continuity. Disclosures: None reported
